Pretty clean for 15 years and 235,000 miles, no?

Yes, quite. As opposed to my engine bay which is well above average in "lol oil" and "lol fuel" filthing from Incidents In The Past. Despite some half-hearted attempts to clean up.

not bad at all, though it is how clear the oil is under the filler cap that really matters on those!

Plastic beauty covers can hide a hell of a mess. Good cars, but look at it carefully because they don't take well to neglect.

Squeaky clean under the cover too. I thoroughly inspected it before purchasing it, no signs of leaks anywhere.

lol you just wiped this off I know it!

Well you have a Land Rover. It probably came from the factory caked in grease and gunk.

Good deal, then. I like the E39 a lot.

You forget that the image annotations don't work and I have absolutely no clue what you are referring to.

I was referring to the Benz, but you are correct. Almost nobody recalls pale green as the Rover engine paint color, and that's for a reason.

you mean like this?
![]() 04/01/2015 at 16:31 |

Worse, even. Because diesel. As a mostly-unrelated note, what was *with* Leyland brands doing valve covers with a little rectangle for stickers/wtf ever? Like on the Rover V8:
Valve covers are better when they have something cast in. Fact.

its easier to clean oil off a sticker than casting i guess
![]() 04/01/2015 at 16:39 |

Cheaper to just make the same head forever than to make the tooling to cast it on for each brand.

It's a 5-speed too.

It at least vaguely made sense for the Rover V8, because they were using it in other things than Rovers... oh wait - they switched to the blank panel valve covers after they quit using it at MG, and that just left TVR (not an issue), Morgan(again), and Triumph. So, Rover and in small numbers Triumph, then. Kind of absurd, really.
Same thing with the Jag 6 - not appearing in anything non-boutique other than Jags and Daimlers.

How much oil was caked on the sway bar?

You know exactly what I'm referring to.

I don't use the word 'clean' lightly.
